Prospective students, friends and alums, welcome!

Chicago Theological Seminary has adopted the slogan: Ministry for the Real World. It causes us a lot of trouble. People want to read “real” to mean “practical,” or worse, “lowest common denominator.” No. By “real” we mean deeply engaged in the messy and conflicted world through which we participate in the life of God, working with God to bring about greater justice and mercy.

Ministry for the Real World means asking, So what? What do our convictions have to do with our actions? It means planting our feet among the people who will teach us about ministry even as we minister among them. It means recognizing that God’s reign is already breaking forth in our midst, here and now.

If you are not content with pat theological answers to someone else’s questions... If you want to study religion and theology with teachers and peers who ask you not only to learn, but also to teach what you know from your life experience... If you are the kind of person who asks the critical questions, “Why?” and “Why not?”... Then, you have found the right place. Visit us and see for yourself.

Grace and peace to you,

Susan Thistlethwaite
President, Chicago Theological Seminary
